During the Millennium, people will enjoy a life span of hundreds of years. (Isa. 65:20-23). Likewise, they also will enjoy perfect health (Isa. 35), and after the Millennium will even become immortal (I Cor. 15:24-26) (Rev. 21:4). Deserts of the world will suddenly bloom as a rose (Isa. 35:1-10) (Isa. 51:3) (Revelation 21:1), and the lamb and the wolf will once again feed together in complete peace and harmony (Isa. 11:6-9) (Isa. 65:25). Even stranger yet is the fact that night will seem as bright as day, and day will seem seven times brighter than it does now (Isaiah 30:26); this would appear to indicate that people will enjoy the privilege of greatly-heightened senses. This millennium of time will also be characterized by a condition of unparalleled peace and security and prosperity throughout all of the world, a condition which will be enforced by the Lord. (Isa. 2:2-4) (Isa. 60:12) (Micah 4:1-8) (Zech. 14:16-21) (Isa. 11:1-10) (Isa. 14:1-8) (Isa. 32) (Isa. 57:13-19) (Zechariah 3:8-10). The following scriptures give us a brief glimpse into future millennial conditions:
Isaiah 35:1-10
1 The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose...
5 Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped.
6 Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert.
7 And the parched ground shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water: in the habitation of dragons, where each lay, shall be grass with reeds and rushes.
8 And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those: the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein.
9 No lion shall be there, nor any ravenous beast shall go up thereon, it shall not be found there; but the redeemed shall walk there:
10 And the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away. (KJV)
Isaiah 11:6-8
6 The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them.
7 And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
8 And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice’ den. (KJV)
Joel 3:18-21
18 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the mountains shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, and a fountain shall come forth of the house of the LORD, and shall water the valley of Shittim.
19 Egypt shall be a desolation, and Edom shall be a desolate wilderness, for the violence against the children of Judah, because they have shed innocent blood in their land.
20 But Judah shall dwell for ever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation.
21 For I will cleanse their blood that I have not cleansed: for the LORD dwelleth in Zion. (KJV)
Compare: Isaiah 30:18-26; Isaiah 65:18-25; Isaiah 32:1-5; and Isaiah 32:15-20 with the preceding biblical scriptures.
The Final Purging Of
Evil
Revelation 20:7-10
7 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,
8 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.
9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.
10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. (KJV)
The final purging of sinful people living on the earth at the end of the Millennial Reign of Christ will be accomplished by freeing Satan from the “bottomless pit,” and then permitting him to “test” all individuals. Those people who are still sinful in nature, despite having lived during the personal reign of Christ, will be “deceived” and will gather with Satan around the city of the saints, Jerusalem. God will then destroy them with fire from Heaven, after which Satan will be tossed into the “lake of fire and brimstone.” (Rev. 20:7-10). Then after the Great White Throne Judgment is concluded, Hell will also be tossed into the eternal Lake of Fire. (Rev. 20:14).
Eternity
“And there was no more sea.” (Rev. 21:1). This statement does not mean there will be no more water on the earth. The implication is that there will not be any large bodies of water such as oceans and seas. Instead, there will be a more equitable distribution of land and water throughout the world, very possibly as a result of the extraordinary earthquake that will happen during the seventh Trumpet-Vial plague (Rev. 16:17-18, 20). Thus, the “surplus” water now on the earth very possibly could be restored to its original location in the sky. After all, the purpose of regeneration and redemption is the restoration of everything, including the earth itself, to the original created condition:
Genesis 1:6-10
6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.
9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.
10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good. (KJV)
This canopy of water in the sky might help to produce a “Garden-of-Eden” environment for the whole earth. It probably would help, at least, to shield the earth from certain harmful rays of the sun, including those that help cause decay. It might even act as an “air-conditioner” regulator, thereby creating a virtual paradise on earth. It is apparent, moreover, that the earth, in general, will be a much different place than it is now. A new world; this is what John saw in his vision.
Revelation 21:1-27
1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.
6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.
7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.
8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
9 And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife.
10 And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,
11 Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal;
12 And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel:
13 On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates.
14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
15 And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city, and the gates thereof, and the wall thereof.
16 And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.
17 And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel.
18 And the building of the wall of it was of jasper: and the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass.
19 And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald;
20 The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolyte; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst.
21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.
22 And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.
23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.
24 And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.
25 And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.
26 And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it.
27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life. (KJV)
“New Jerusalem.” (Revelation 3:12; Revelation 21:2). As noted in Dake’s Annotated Reference Bible, New Jerusalem is called new because of its eternal freshness and newness of character and nature, not because it is brand-new in existence. Actually, it is as old as Heaven itself, and was promised to the earliest saints on the earth (Heb. 11:10-16; Ps. 93:2; Ps. 103:19).
“That great city.” (Measuring about 1500 miles in its length, width, and height; with 216-foot-high walls surrounding it.) The city of “New Jerusalem” is the “Lamb’s wife” only in the sense that it is the home and dwelling-place of the saints. Thus, it will be the saints who will be the “bride of Christ” (Rev. 19:7-9), not an inanimate object such as the city of New Jerusalem. Obviously it would be silly to compare God’s “relationship” with a literal city to the ideal marriage relationship portrayed in Ephesians 5:22-33. So, it will be the saints who will enjoy a very special personal relationship with Christ, not the literal city itself.
Revelation 22:1-5
1 And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.
2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
3 And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:
4 And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.
5 And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever. (KJV)
In a vision, the prophet Isaiah saw this marvelous and radiant city existing near the earth during the eternal age to come. Watching its inhabitants come and go prompted him to ask, with wonderment and amazement:
Isaiah 60:8
8 Who are these that fly as a cloud, and as the doves to their windows? (KJV)
“And the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.” This does not mean there will be any sickness or disease in God’s eternal Kingdom; only a simple recognition that accidents can happen even to people in a perfect, sin-free environment so long as they are freewill in nature. This does not mean, either, that the leaves will give immortality to people because death will be abolished by Christ at the end of the Millennium. Also, apparently there may be huge numbers of these trees because they are in the middle of the streets and on both sides of the river (probably rivers) of this incredibly-large city.
“Shall reign for ever and ever.” Some people have said that time and causality will cease in Heaven, thus implying a static and boring existence for the saints throughout eternity. This erroneous concept probably stems from the King James Translation of Revelation 10:6, which reads, in relevant part: “There should be time no more.” A more accurate rendering of this scriptural passage would say something such as “the fulfillment of the mystery of God will not be delayed any longer.” (The Greek word for “time” is CHRONOS, and it is defined as meaning a space or measure of “time”; by implication, “delay.”) Therefore, eternity is not the indefinite cessation of time itself, but the infinity of time.
Revelation 22:6-21
6 And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done.
7 Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book.
8 And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things.
9 Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.
10 And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand.
11 He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.
12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.
13 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.
14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.
16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.
17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.
18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:
19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
20 He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
21 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen. (KJV)
Actually, we know very little about the extraordinary conditions which will prevail for eternity in the future, perfect Kingdom of God. However, it is very exciting to realize that we (Christians) will actually acquire such an amazing inheritance! Thus, we shall be both “kings” and “priests” with Christ forever! (Dan. 7:27) (Rev. 2:26) (Rev. 21:7-10) (Rev. 22:5) (Isa. 32:1) (Isa. 56:5) (Isa. 60:8). Although ordinary people will not possess the incredible supernatural abilities of the saints, some of which Christ demonstrated immediately after His resurrection, they will enjoy enhanced mental and physical attributes as well as overall perfection and immortality. Additionally, they will procreate offspring forever because God’s Kingdom will be an ever-expanding kingdom (Isa. 9:7) (Isa. 60:22) in which people will populate planets of the universe forever. Moreover, rest assured that God never again will allow sin to blot the perfection of His creation; the absence of Satan will make it very easy to rear children so that they never will sin, while everyone will be free to look down into the Lake of Fire anytime they wish to observe the fate of transgressors (Isa. 34:8-15) (Isa. 66:24) (Rev. 14:10, 11).
